How It Started

Sage Karam was born and raised in the town of Nazareth, Pennsylvania.

His passion for racing began at a young age, and he honed his skills by racing go-karts at the Oakland Valley Race Park in Cuddebackville, New York, during his youth.

It was there that his talent on the track started to shine.

In 2010, Karam made his mark in the U.S. F2000 National Championship, competing for the Andretti Autosport team.

He had an extraordinary season, securing nine out of twelve race victories and claiming pole position in all but one race.

Karam’s dominant performances led him to clinch the championship title.

Thanks to the Road to Indy program and the Mazdaspeed development ladder, Karam’s achievement earned him a remarkable prize package valued at $350,000.

This invaluable opportunity allowed him to compete in the Star Mazda Championship in 2011, once again under the banner of Andretti Autosport.

NASCAR

Sage Karam made his NASCAR debut on July 26, 2021, driving the No. 31 car for Jordan Anderson Racing in the Xfinity Series’ Pennzoil 150 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

His schedule with JAR was later expanded to include races at Bristol Motor Speedway and the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval, as well as the Camping World Truck Series event at Martinsville Speedway.

In 2022, Karam signed with Alpha Prime Racing for a part-time Xfinity schedule.

At Road America, he had an on-road incident with Noah Gragson, resulting in Gragson intentionally spinning out Karam, causing a 13-car pileup.

Gragson was fined and penalized for his actions.

In a September 2022 interview, Karam expressed his desire to secure a full-time NASCAR ride for 2023 after running part-time in 2021 and 2022.

Later, it was announced on December 2 that Karam would return to APR to run at least 17 races in 2023, with the potential for a full season if sponsorship could be secured.

However, full sponsorship was not found, leading Karam to run part-time for APR in the Xfinity Series in 2023. Additionally, he also drove the No. 24 car for Sam Hunt Racing in the race at Road America.

Crash

In August 2015, 20-year-old IndyCar rookie Sage Karam took to the track at Pocono, his home turf, for what would become a significant moment in his racing career.

After initial struggles, he found his rhythm in the open-wheel series and showcased his potential by leading five laps on his way to a commendable fifth-place finish at Fontana.

Not long after, he secured an impressive third-place finish at Iowa Speedway.

However, the Pocono race would forever be marked by a tragic incident.

On Lap 175 of the scheduled 200, Karam moved into the lead ahead of Takuma Sato.

Regrettably, on Lap 179, as he exited Turn 1, Karam’s rear tires lost grip, leading to a crash into the outer wall. The impact scattered debris across the track, causing concern and prompting immediate safety measures.

The front cone from Karam’s Chip Ganassi car dislodged and careened up the track, tragically striking Justin Wilson, who was driving behind him.

At the time, IndyCar cockpits lacked significant protection, and the cone hit Wilson, causing him to lose consciousness.

Despite the best efforts of medical teams, the 37-year-old British driver succumbed to his injuries the following day.
