In February 2023, at Daytona International Speedway, Mayer’s car took a long ride upside down as he attempted to overtake his teammate in an effort to win, but instead spun and flipped as it came into contact with Austin Hill’s car.

Despite this major incident at the Xfinity Series, Mayer sustained no significant injuries.

In his interview with Fox’s Bob Pockrass, he said,

“Sliding on my roof that far with sparks in my face was definitely wild to see”, he further adds. “It’s been quite a few years since I’ve been upside down. That was probably the hardest lick I’ve taken”.

He faced another horrific crash in the ARCA Menards Series, which affected a dozen drivers, as Mayer made a TA2 Trans-Am start at Road America and went through a hairline fracture in his wrist, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

However, despite the injury, Mayer finished second but expressed disappointment at how abruptly the race ended.

Mayer Ends Up In A Controversial Fist Fight With Ty Gibbs

On April 9, 2022, Brandon Jones won the Xfinity Series race at Martinsville Speedway while Ty Gibbs and Sam Mayer were fighting each other, according to cbssports.com

Brandon Jones was leading the race, and as Ty Gibbs tried to make a move for the lead, Sam Mayer ran into him up the track, causing a three-car pileup for second place. Mayer ended up driving Gibbs into the wall.

Gibbs immediately confronted his displeasure by running into Mayer, and the two exchanged words and shoves.

Ty Gibbs, the grandson of Pro Football and NASCAR Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs, was unhooking his helmet as Mayer shoved him again, which triggered him to toss his right hand on Mayer’s face.

Before being split apart, the two went down in a pile. Both drivers were then forced to the ground by NASCAR officials and crew members.

Later, Gibbs explained what led to their fight:

“I talked to Sam. I was frustrated. I was like, ‘What are you doing? when we got behind the fence. We were kind of shoved a little bit, and I turned away.

“When I got grabbed and kind of pulled, that just led up to that moment. It just built up, built up, built up, and I snapped, and that’s just part of it. Hopefully, I learn from it.”

Gibb’s punch left a mark on Mayer’s face. He was dissatisfied with Gibbs walking up to him with the helmet on. He told in his interview with Bob Pockrass,

“It’s kind of funny because he walked up to me; I had my helmet off already,” Mayer said. “He had his helmet on, so obviously he was scared about something, or he had it in his mind to throw a punch the whole time. That’s on him, not me.

Unfortunately, their fight injured a NASCAR official, who was sent to the hospital. Mayer then, through his Twitter handle, apologized to the NASCAR official and wished him a speedy recovery.
