Initially, Riggs was declared a winner in the CARS Tour event. However, after post-race inspection, officials discovered a discrepancy with Layne Riggs’ No. 62 Kevin Harvick, Inc.
The inspection found a part that was over-tolerant on Rigg’s car. As a result, Riggs was disqualified, and Jared Fryar was named the official winner of the event.
Rodney Childers, crew chief for Riggs’ No. 62 car, took to social media to address the issue and said he had no knowledge that the particular part was not allowed in the CARS Tour.
He apologized for the situation and took full responsibility for the oversight.
Likewise, Riggs was involved in another controversial situation with Peyton Sellers.
Throughout the summer, Sellers and Riggs engaged in competitive battles across Virginia for the championship trophy.
Initially, it seemed that Sellers had won due to a tiebreaker and became the NASCAR Weekly Series National Champion after the race at Motor Mile Speedway and Dominion Raceway.
But it was somewhat controversial; Sellers swept both races at Motor Mile but only after swapping over from his usual No. 26 to the No. 0 typically driven by Landon Pembelton of Sellers Racing.
Before the Dominion Raceway event, Sellers trailed Riggs by two points, but he had one extra win. Sellers won the first Dominion feature, withdrew from the second, and raced a backup car.
NASCAR conducted an audit of crucial races during the season and found violations.
These violations prompted NASCAR to strip disqualified drivers’ results from races, preventing those races from counting as full fields. This ruling affected Sellers and others, ultimately costing Sellers valuable points.
